1. About This Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how OnByte ("OnByte," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you use OnByte.com and related services (the "Service"). It applies to the current OnByte beta.
OnByte.com is currently available by invitation or through a waitlist. It is not yet open for unrestricted public registration.
This Policy describes our current practices. It does not describe features we plan to build in the future unless we say those features exist today.
If you have questions about this Policy, contact us at privacy@onbyte.com.
2. Scope
This Policy applies to:
- Visitors to OnByte.com, including the waitlist
- Adults who create an OnByte account
- Adults who create and manage a managed-child profile within a Household
- Children who use OnByte through a managed-child profile
For information specifically about managed-child profiles, see our **Children's Privacy Notice**, which supplements this Policy.
3. Information We Collect
3.1 Information You Provide
Waitlist. If you join the OnByte waitlist, we collect your first name, last name, email address, role (such as parent, educator, or other), and, optionally, an age range. Submission of the waitlist form is protected by a bot-detection service, and we store a hashed version of your IP address as part of that protection.
Invitations. If you are invited to OnByte by an existing household member or through an early-access or promotional code, we process the information necessary to validate and complete that invitation, such as your email address.
Adult account creation. When you create an adult account, we use a third-party authentication service to manage sign-up and sign-in, which collects information such as your email address and, depending on how you sign up, a name. Supported sign-in options may vary and can include email and, where available, other sign-in options.
Onboarding. During onboarding, we ask for information such as a username, avatar selection, your role (for example, parent or student), grade level (for students), learning goals, and time zone. We do not ask adults for a date of birth as part of standard onboarding.
Managed-child profiles. An adult may create a managed-child profile for a child within their Household. When doing so, we collect the child's first name, birth year, and grade. The creating adult may optionally set a username, password, and recovery email for the child. See our **Children's Privacy Notice** for details.
Household information. We collect information about Household membership and the relationships between Household members (for example, adult and child roles) in order to provide Household features, such as connecting family members and managing profiles within a family.
Groups. If you create or join a Group (for example, a family, club, or team community outside your Household), we collect information about group membership, invitations, and join requests.
Feedback. If you submit feedback or a content report to us, we collect the content of your message and associated account and technical information needed to review it.
3.2 Information Collected Automatically
Gameplay and learning data. We collect information generated as you use OnByte, including quiz and session results, experience points ("XP"), streaks, word- and skill-level performance, learning progress, and achievement or badge records.
Analytics. We use analytics tools to understand how people use OnByte, including which pages and features are used, general gameplay activity, and general performance information. We configure our analytics to collect a defined set of product events rather than automatically capturing every interaction on the page. Session replay is not active on OnByte.
Cookies and similar technologies. OnByte uses cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in and to support the analytics practices described above.
Security and audit logs. We maintain security-related logs (such as rate-limiting and administrative action records) to protect the Service. These are not used for advertising.
4. How We Use Information
We use the information described above to:
- Operate, maintain, and improve OnByte
- Create and manage accounts and Household relationships
- Provide gameplay, track learning progress, and award achievements
- Operate leaderboards and Groups
- Communicate with you about your account, invitations, and the waitlist
- Maintain the security and integrity of the Service, including bot and abuse prevention
- Understand product usage through the analytics practices described above
- Respond to feedback, support requests, and privacy requests
5. Public and Shared Information
Leaderboards. OnByte includes weekly competitive leagues. A user's username, avatar, league tier, and weekly XP may be visible to other users on Global Leaderboards. Managed-child profiles with a known birth year may participate in Global Leaderboards by default; parents and Household managers can disable Global Leaderboard participation for those profiles through Household settings. If a managed-child profile does not have a usable birth year, the profile does not appear on Global Leaderboards. Global Leaderboards are privacy-safe competitive standings and do not enable messaging, profile interaction, following, invitations, or other social interaction.
Family leaderboard. Progress and rankings for members of the same Household, including managed children, are visible to other members of that Household.
Groups. Managed children classified as under 13 (based on birth year) do not create, join, or participate in Groups on their own; parent-managed Group membership for under-13 children is not currently available. If you or your managed-child profile classified as 13 or older participate in a Group, the username, avatar, and group activity (such as weekly XP) may be visible to other members of that Group.
Usernames and avatars are chosen by the user or, for a managed child, by the adult managing the profile. We encourage choosing a username and avatar that do not reveal a child's real-world identity or other personal information, but our current systems do not guarantee that every username is anonymous or free of identifying information.
We do not currently offer tournaments, public chat, messaging, or general public profile pages.
6. How We Share Information
We do not sell personal information.
We rely on a small number of third-party service providers to operate OnByte, including providers that support authentication, hosting, data storage, analytics, and bot protection. These providers process information on our behalf solely to help us operate the Service, and we do not authorize them to use that information for their own independent purposes.
OnByte does not currently send user or child gameplay data to third-party generative AI or large language model providers as part of normal use of the Service.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights, safety, or property of OnByte or others, or in connection with a change in ownership of OnByte (such as a merger or acquisition), subject to this Policy or a successor policy.
7. Communications
Waitlist communications. If you join the waitlist, we may send you updates about OnByte. We do not currently offer an automated, self-service email preference center. If you would like to stop receiving waitlist communications, you can contact us at privacy@onbyte.com and we will process your request.
Account communications. We may send you transactional communications related to sign-up, sign-in, and account security.
No marketing email system for accounts. OnByte does not currently operate a marketing email or recurring digest program for account holders.
No direct communications to children. We do not send email communications directly to children.
8. Data Retention
We retain account and gameplay information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Service, maintain accurate records, and meet legal and operational requirements.
Waitlist information is retained until you are invited, convert to an account, or request removal.
Security and audit logs are retained as necessary for security and operational purposes.
If an adult removes a managed-child profile, see our **Children's Privacy Notice** for how that process currently works.
9. Your Choices and Requests
You may contact privacy@onbyte.com to ask about the information we hold about you, request that we stop sending you certain communications, or request deletion of your personal information.
We will respond to requests we can verify and reasonably fulfill. OnByte does not currently offer an automated self-service tool to export or fully delete your account data; requests are currently handled manually, and we will let you know what we are able to do in response to your specific request.
10. Security
We use technical and administrative safeguards designed to protect information on OnByte, including access controls, rate limiting, and audit logging for administrative actions. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Children's Privacy
OnByte is intended for use by children only through a managed-child profile created and managed by an adult within a Household. We do not currently offer a way for a child to independently create an OnByte account. Please see our **Children's Privacy Notice** for detailed information about managed-child profiles.
12. International Use
OnByte is currently intended primarily for users in the United States during this beta. If you access OnByte from outside the United States, your information will be processed in the United States as described in this Policy.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the "Last Updated" date above when we do. If we make material changes, we will provide reasonable notice, such as posting a notice on OnByte.com.
