1. Who This Notice Is For
This notice is written for parents and guardians. It explains how OnByte handles information for children who use OnByte through a managed-child profile.
This notice works together with our general Privacy Policy. If something in this notice is more specific about children, this notice controls for that topic.
2. How a Child's Profile Is Created
Managed-child profiles are created and managed through an adult OnByte account. An adult with appropriate permissions in a family's Household sets up a profile for a child from within their own account.
The adult creating a managed-child profile is responsible for confirming that they are the child's parent or legal guardian, or otherwise have appropriate authority to create and manage the profile on the child's behalf. OnByte does not independently verify this authority.
OnByte does not currently offer a way for a child to sign up on their own, and a child's profile is not placed into any kind of pending or awaiting-approval state, because an adult creates the profile from the start.
3. Information We Collect About a Child
When an adult sets up a managed-child profile, we collect:
- The child's first name
- The child's birth year
- The child's grade level
- A username for the child
- An avatar the child selects or is assigned
- Optionally, a password for the child to log in
- Optionally, a recovery email address supplied by the adult
As the child plays, we also collect:
- Gameplay activity, such as quiz results, XP, streaks, and skill performance
- Learning progress, achievements, and badges
- Leaderboard and Group activity, as described below
4. How a Child Signs In
A managed-child profile uses a separate sign-in system from adult accounts, based on a username and password if one was set. An adult in the Household can access the child's profile context to view settings, progress, and history and to perform appropriate parental management. Gameplay and learning activity must be performed by the child whose profile owns the activity.
5. What Other People Can See
Leaderboards. Managed-child profiles with a known birth year may participate in Global Leaderboards by default. On Global Leaderboards, the child's username, avatar, league tier, and weekly XP may be visible to other users as privacy-safe competitive standings. Parents and Household managers can disable Global Leaderboard participation for a managed-child profile through Household settings. If a managed-child profile does not have a usable birth year, the profile does not appear on Global Leaderboards. Global Leaderboards do not enable messaging, opening other players' profiles, following players, sending invitations, or other social interaction. We encourage choosing a username and avatar that do not reveal the child's real name or other personal information, but OnByte's current systems do not guarantee complete anonymity.
Family leaderboard. Other members of the same Household can see the child's activity and standing on the Family leaderboard.
Groups. Managed children classified as under 13 (based on birth year) cannot create, join, or participate in Groups on their own. Parent-managed Group membership for under-13 children is not currently available. For managed-child profiles classified as 13 or older, an adult may control whether the profile can create new Groups; the profile may still be permitted to join existing Groups the adult allows. Other members of a Group can see the participating child's username, avatar, and group activity.
OnByte does not currently offer tournaments, chat, direct messaging, or public profile pages, so a child's information is not exposed through those features because they do not exist today.
6. Analytics
When a child uses OnByte, we collect information about how the Service is used. For managed children classified as under 13 (based on birth year), we do not use PostHog client analytics during their authenticated sessions (no pageviews, custom gameplay events, or behavioral analytics via PostHog). For older managed children, the general analytics practices described in our Privacy Policy apply: we collect information about which pages and features are used, general gameplay activity, and general performance information, using a defined set of product events rather than automatically capturing every interaction. Session replay is not active. We do not use this information for advertising, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles of children.
7. Who We Share Information With
The service providers described in our Privacy Policy that support hosting, data storage, analytics, and bot protection may process information generated by a child's use of OnByte, solely to help us operate the Service. A managed-child profile does not use the same authentication service as adult accounts.
We do not sell children's personal information, and we do not use children's information for targeted advertising.
OnByte does not currently send a child's gameplay data to third-party generative AI or large language model providers as part of normal use of the Service.
8. Adult Controls
As the adult managing a Household, you can currently:
- Create a managed-child profile and set or change the child's username, password, and recovery email
- Turn Global Leaderboard participation on or off for a managed-child profile (when the child's birth year is known)
- For managed-child profiles classified as 13 or older: turn the ability to create new Groups on or off
- View your child's gameplay activity and progress from your own account
- Remove a child's profile from your Household (see Section 9)
- Contact us at privacy@onbyte.com to ask questions about your child's information or to request deletion
9. Removing a Child's Profile
If you remove a child's profile from your Household, we deactivate the profile, remove it from your Household, and clear its stored password so the profile can no longer be used to sign in. This removes the child's active access to the Service.
Removing a profile in this way is different from permanently erasing every historical record. Some information may continue to be retained for a period of time for security, legal, or limited operational purposes, consistent with our data retention practices.
If you would like OnByte to review and delete your child's personal information beyond deactivating the profile, contact privacy@onbyte.com, and we will evaluate and process that request. We do not currently offer an automated, self-service tool to permanently erase all associated records, so these requests are handled manually.
10. Your Right to Review and Manage Your Child's Information
You have the right to:
- Review the categories of information we collect about your child, as described in this notice
- Ask questions about how that information is used
- Manage the settings described in Section 8
- Ask us to stop collecting further information about your child by removing the child's profile
- Request that we delete your child's personal information by contacting privacy@onbyte.com
11. Adult Authority and Responsibility
By creating a managed-child profile, the adult confirms that they are the child's parent or legal guardian, or are otherwise authorized to create and manage the profile on the child's behalf, and confirms that they have reviewed this notice. OnByte relies on this confirmation and does not independently verify parental or guardian status as part of this process.
12. No Direct Marketing to Children
We do not send marketing communications directly to children, and a child does not have an independent email address on file with OnByte beyond an optional adult-provided recovery email.
13. Changes to This Notice
We may update this notice from time to time. We will update the "Last Updated" date above when we do.
